Problem
You get an error message when starting a translate application
"An error occurred while opening the dictionary. The file is either not a Translate dictionary, or the file is corrupted, or it is being used by another application. Please also check that the file is not write-protected." or similar.
This error message may also appear repeatedly, but can be ignored without any obvious disadvantage.
Explanation
Particularly after repeatedly installing the software sometimes a user's personal settings are no longer correct. This includes wrong paths being stored for the user dictionaries. Consequently, Translate is unable to open these invalid dictionaries during program startup.
Solution
You have two options of solving the problem:
- Reset all user settings
This is the most comfortable solution, but also resets your personal settings regarding the translation process etc. which were in effect at the time of resetting.
- Remove the user dictionaries concerned from the list of user dictionaries selectively or correct the paths manually
You can keep your other settings, however, it takes a little more effort on your side.
Reset all settings
For Translate and the Click&Translate tool that comes along with Translate as well as for Translate Web, please use the tool "Reset Options" which is installed together with Translate.
You will find it in your start menu at
Start > (All) Programs > digital publishing > translate quick⁄plus⁄pro > Tools > Reset Options
Please run this tool and have your options reset by clicking the button "Reset".
Correct user dictionaries by hand
Open the dictionary settings in the translate main application (Dictionary > Settings). Please check whether a correct path is given for the active user dictionary on the "active" tab, then choose "passive", activate "display paths" and check the passive dictionaries. Invalid dictionaries are removed from the list automatically when the dialog is closed.
If this should not solve the issue, please reset your personal settings as described above.
